Short description

This paper reports on the development of a sensor configuration based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology for measurement of multi-axial stresses or strains in thermo hardened composite elements used in space applications. In this project, multiaxial FBG's (written in Polarization Maintaining fibers) are used. These allow not only measuring of axial stress but also the effects of transverse stress. Firstly, the developed sensor concept-elaborated in detail in a former paper- is discussed. In this concept a glass capillary is used as an isolator for transverse stress. Secondly, we discuss the feasibility of this sensor configuration, illustrated by preliminary experimental results and numerical simulations.
