Fibre Bragg gratings in cables for remotely operated vehicles

Jon Steinar Andreassen, Johan Vlekken

Short description

This paper reports experience in the usage of Fibre Bragg Gratings for monitoring internal temperature in a dynamic cable. The cable is an umbilical for a remotely operated vehicle, and the field measurements were performed after 9 months in service. The gratings were found to remain stable for that period, that is the mechanical exposures on the cable has not caused significant mechanical stress on the gratings. Hence, the temperature monitoring in dynamic cables using distributed in line gratings is found to be within required accuracy.
